Celebrity Golfers - From Bob Hope to Justin Timberlake

Celebrity Golfers - From Bob Hope to Justin Timberlake Arnold Palmer was the original, true celebrity golfer having burst on the scene just as television cameras, in the 1960’s, were sending live tournament images of the macho, matinee-hero-like Pennsylvanian, as Gary Player mythologizes, “plucking hair from his chest and tossing them into the air to see which was the wind was blowing.”

New Golf Destinations Not So Far-Flung; Melania Trump’s Slovenia

New Golf Destinations Not So Far-Flung; Melania Trump’s Slovenia  President Donald Trump’s reputation in the world of golf is very well established and well known. “The Donald”-turned-Commander in Chief” has purchased, or operates, some time-honored and legendary courses: Doral, in Miami; Turnberry, in Scotland; and Doonbeg, in Ireland, to name a few of his acquisitions.

A Conversation with Major Champion Steve Elkington

A Conversation with Major Champion Steve Elkington Australian Steve Elkington won 10 times on the PGA Tour, including a Major Championship victory in the 1995 PGA Championship at Riviera County Club in Pacific Palisades, California. He now lives in both the Sydney, Australia area and in Houston, Texas, where he’s founded SecretGolf.com, a portal of golf instruction, commentary, and advice about strategy and the mental game through videos, blogs, cartoons and more. I talked with him in October after Tiger Woods abruptly withdrew in advance of his planned return to the competitive golf at Silverado GC in Napa, California.

Arnold Palmer's Legacy

Arnold Palmer's Legacy To say that the late Arnold Palmer was a multiple Major Championship winner on the PGA Tour is to understate his impact on the game of golf. His legacy goes well beyond the fairways and greens. In addition to a clothing line, and endorsing products such as Cadillac, Pennzoil, and the “Arnold Palmer:” (a half lemonade/half iced tea drink), Palmer founded The Golf Channel; had an ownership stake in Pebble Beach Golf Links, and was a member at Augusta National.

"Tea to Sea" Golf in Canada

"Tea to Sea" Golf in Canada My fellow players and I walked into the small cottage that served as a halfway house in the middle of our round…to order a round. It was brisker than normal, but not unpleasantly so, for a July day in eastern Canada. There is no point in describing it as southeastern Canada since the entire nation was so colorfully painted in song as “The Great White North by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, playing “Bob and Doug McKenzie” in a recurring comedy bit on SCTV.

Running Down Doak...Catching Up with Famed Golf Architect Tom Doak

Running Down Doak...Catching Up with Famed Golf Architect Tom Doak Tom Doak, the iconoclastic, minimalist golf course architect who gave the golf world Pacific Dunes, a seaside links course in Oregon; and the oceanfront Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand; among other acclaimed, high-profile creations, has been busy designing, shaping, building and ...writing...again.

Lavish Links Courses Require a Patient Mindset

Lavish Links Courses Require a Patient Mindset Royal County Down, in Northern Ireland, is the world’s top-ranked golf course according to “Golf Magazine.” This summer, according to Secretary Manager David Wilson, the guest starting times are virtually completely already reserved; 75-percent of the visitors will come from America.

Montgomerie Mounts a Major Charge as a Senior

Montgomerie Mounts a Major Charge as a Senior Champions Tour player Colin Montgomerie was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame without ever winning a Major Championship. The Scotsman had multiple runner-up finishes in the British Open, U.S. Open and PGA Championships, and he never could break through and win in the United States – except in the Ryder Cup matches, where he enjoyed an undefeated singles record. To be fair most of his play was on the European Tour, where he won 31 times and topped the European Order of Merit for nearly a decade. American fans loved to get his goat by heckling him – and were only encouraged when the American media labeled the pasty, pudgy, grumpy Montgomerie: “Mrs. Doubtfire.”
